Officially 4-weeks for the current government shutdown
Key Issues:
- Proposal to back fund the federal positions is rejected for the 13th time. Failing 54 â 45, short of 60 needed to pass. No unforeseen Dems voted in favor.
- JD Vance and the Senate Republican party find a way to pay military workers but was undisclosed.
- 25-states an DC are suing the Trump administration due to withholding food aid of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The argument is government is required to provide funds for 42 million Americans that will end Saturday November 1st.
Airport operations already feeling the burden going without pay
Several airports report increase in the amount of controllers calling out sick due to the lack of wages. This has led to numerous flight delays and staff shortages. Employees are to receive back pay, this will not go into effect until after the shutdown has ceased. Several controllers claim with the lack of pay families are unable to function normally. Causing excess stress going into an already turbulent work environment.
Trumpâs plan to move money for SNAP is inaccurate
The agricultural secretary noted that the Trump administration cannot âmove money around to fund SNAPâ. The administration does not hold the authority to continue funding food programs during a government shutdown. The Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins while the program feeds 40 million Americans, the shutdown will halt their ability to buy groceries. Rollins states the government does not have authority to touch contingency funds to pay for SNAP. Noted government aimed to control $5 billion when in fact it takes $9.2 billion to fully from the SNAP fund for the next month.
Senate leader John Thune argues that the proposal to institute individual bills to fund programs like SNAP is the wrong approach. âOne here, and one there might make the proposals palatable, but is the wrong way to solve the issue,â Thune stated. He claims it is pointless to continue to vote when the outcome will always remain Democrats voting to remain closed ().
Union reps pressing Democrats to end the shutdown
House Speaker Mike Johnson shared a statement of the large union in American pushing for Democrats to remove themselves from the fight. Johnson made a statement that âDemocrats have placed themselves in a corner and now is the time to pull the parachute as union reps are calling for an end to the shutdown.â The Republican party has floated the federal pay gap during the shutdown through November 21st, but realistically after that itâs a crap shoot.

Hawleyâs plea to snap the shutdown
Hawley, like all Republican reps is also pushing for Democrats to support the bill to fund the federal SNAP program. The Senator stating, âit will be another grim milestone when the food aid is not provided on November 1st.â He is pushing the Keep SNAP Funded Act providing necessary sums to provide the benefits without any gaps in payments. Hawley highlights the issues already faced by service workers forcing thousands without pay.
This shutdown continuance withholding food funding will usher in a completing unprecedented level of suffering for thousands of families. It is highlighted that this is the classic power struggle of Democrats blaming Republicans, and Republicans blaming Democrats when all Senators will go without any disruption to their daily lives.
Senate Republicans consider separate measures to pay programs
As the shutdown continues, Republicans are in continued discussion on how to continue funding the federal programs. The party is under a constant balancing act of what programs to fund. The main turbulence coming from paying the air traffic control party, military or SNAP program. This decisions seems to lay heavily on a lunch taking place next Tuesday when it is discussed and decided on a strategy moving forward.
It is noted by Senator Markwayne Mullin from Oklahoma that this same issue has been presented in the past and Democrats have repeatedly supported continued funding bills. Everything seems to hang in the balance of the repeated voting process. Where the options are to withhold pay to millions of American families and vital government funded programs or simply hold out just because the other party does not want to seem the lesser and break rank to Republican party to support the American economy. Which is the main purpose of elected officials.
